I wake up, drink black coffee, and manually write an email to my list every day. I do it because I enjoy it, and done right it will lead to more sales than sending less frequently. On the other end of the email spectrum... There are people who write a series of emails one time that go out to new readers automatically, then maybe send once per week manually. Which method is better? Here's my take: With frequent broadcast emails, you have a fair bit of creative freedom. You can try new ideas, send a recurring series, and have plenty of space across the week and month to mix value with sales. And if an email flops? That's okay because you're going to be sending another anyway. The potential downside is you have to constantly come up with content to send out without repeating yourself too much. In the automated email world, you have more time freedom. You write 3, 7, 14, 21, or even 30 or more emails one time, and they get send to new readers without you lifting a finger. I did a 30 day email series back in 2020 and it was kinda nice because I just had to focus on getting new readers, knowing they'll be taken care of once they join. The downside is you have to be a lot more deliberate on what you put in the sequence of emails. Because waiting all that time to find out which emails do well or not then having to go back and edit the low performers on days 4, 16, and 23 (for example) is kind of a pain. And you're still sending at least weekly emails to readers who finish the sequence either way. Here's my experience-backed opinion: If you're new to the email biz world, then I think it's best to write one automated welcome email and focus on regular broadcast emails. But if you have a bit more experience with email list management, you can toy with writing email sequences because you have a handle on what works and what doesn't for your list.
