It's crazy how no one talks about sales tax and VAT on digital products.

All these Lambo-rental-lovers out there trying to make it seem so easy to make a bunch of money with courses, but when selling to some countries...

You might be liable for VAT on the very first transaction.

And in the US?

In many cases you automatically owe sales tax for all the sales you make in your home state.

Then as you cross varied tax thresholds for certain types of products, you owe in other states and countries.

Now I'm no international tax specialist, but I'm betting it's not ideal to have unpaid taxes anywhere in the world.

So you really have 3 options:

1. Sell digital products with any old software or checkout and manage transactions, registrations, thresholds, remittance, and international tax law yourself
2. Hire a specialist or pay for a really good tax monitoring service, and pay for all nexus or VAT registrations in every state and country you become liable in too
3. Use a good Merchant of Record, likely pay higher transaction fees, and not have to worry about any of that

I'm just some dad from the Midwest.

I know a thing or two about operating a micro biz on the internet, but...

Ain't nobody got time for that.

And for some reason...

When I created and started selling How To Launch An Email Based Biz, I forgot about all this tax stuff so I'm going to update the ebook to include an FTC compliant mention of international taxes.

As for recommendations moving forward:

Selling with Kit isn't worth the many potential headaches (I already have 3 international tax issues smh).

Neither is Stan Store or Beacons or any other online shop that doesn't handle this stuff for you.

That's why I'm back to focusing on Skool.

Gumroad and Teachable using their Teachable Payments service are other viable options as well.
